Health  – Wellness – Medicine – Are the words interchangeable?

What is health? A dictionary answer goes like this – noun

1) the general condition of the body or mind with reference to soundness and vigour: good health; poor health.

2) soundness of body or mind; freedom from disease or ailment: to have one’s health; to lose one’s health

What is wellness? A dictionary answer goes like this – noun

1) the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

2) an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

What is medicine? A dictionary answer goes like this – noun

1) any substance or substances used in treating disease or illness; medicament; remedy.

2) the art or science of restoring or preserving health or due physical condition, as by means of drugs, surgical operations, appliances or manipulations.

So it appears that, Health, Wellness and Medicine are 3 totally different words with different meanings.

Somehow these different words with different meanings seem to be used interchangeably by many people today. Is it lack of education or deliberate deception?

By general definition then:

Health means a condition of the body or mind.

Wellness means being healthy by deliberate effort.

Medicine means human interference, physically or by administering a substance.
